Meet the makers: ATERIO HOME

There are some matches that are meant to be. And our partnership with Aterio Home is one of them.

From the moment we saw Mona Boubekeur’s graphic and colourful work, we knew we had to do something together. And since then, we’ve worked with Mona to produce pieces for our shop as well as our 20th anniversary collection.

For us, Aterio pieces are pure dopamine design. Joyful, playful and perfect for adding an extra dimension of colour to any interior.

Born and raised in Casablanca, Mona moved to London to do a degree in international business management before studying at the Chelsea College of Arts. She then went on to work for a large global design company, working on international projects everywhere from Miami to China.

But after Mona and husband Faouzi became parents, they decided they wanted to be closer to their families and moved back to Casablanca.

‘We bought a house which needed renovation and because all the suppliers I knew were in London, I had to find new ones in Morocco,’ says Mona. ‘I’d worked with resin before for paneling and cabinetry but when I met the artisans here, I realised just how creatively it could be used. That’s how Aterio Home was born.’’

After having nightstands and coffee tables made for her home, Mona asked an artisan to make a tray and liked the result so much she spent the next year testing products.

‘What I loved was that everything was done by hand so there are charming imperfections in the work,’ she says. ‘But I also saw that the artisans were as perfectionist as me. And because the resin can be made in any colour or finish,  I had this amazing creative freedom.’

Today Aterio Home produces furniture like console, side and dining tables, as well as accessories including trays and boxes. A signature of the range is that the polycarbon resin pieces are finished in materials such as bone, brass and mother of pearl.

As well as the main Aterio Line, Mona also creates bespoke products for El Fenn and private clients. Recent projects include a beautiful installation of oversized honeycombs made of resin for Hive Honey in Selfridges.

The work is labour intensive and time consuming. A tray can take anywhere from three days to two weeks to produce for instance because each element has to be poured, dried and polished separately.

‘We will never make mass market products because everything is handmade,’ says Mona. ‘They’re unique. And that’s what creates their beauty.’
