Day Trip to Agafay from Marrakech
Think desert, think Sahara, think sand + at least a three-day trip from Marrakech. But if you haven’t got the time to make the trip down south, you can still live out your desert dreams just an hour’s drive from Marrakech.
The Agafay is a rock desert: think lunar landscape complete with arid plains and dramatic dune-like hills. Just 30km from El Fenn, it’s perfect for lunch, dinner or an overnight stay and you get all the peace and solitude of the Sahara – without the long travel times. Just remember though that the desert is all about the sunrise and sunset so make sure you catch either of those on any visit.
We work with two camps in Agafay. The first, Scarabeo, pitches its luxury tents in two locations – depending on the season – and their aim is to be in complete harmony with the landscape. The entire encampment is lit by candles each night, bread is baked over open fires every morning and the beautiful tents are styled with African mats, Berber carpets and crisp white sheets.
Alternatively, The White Camel is a static camp that comes complete with an infinity pool looking out over the hills, plus a formal restaurant as well as a more relaxed tented one. You can either stay in a Bedouin-style tent, or there are ten permanent lodges with stunning views over the Agafay courtesy of floor to ceiling windows. For the ultimate desert luxe, there’s also a royal suite with its own private pool.
Life in the desert follows a laid back rhythm. And that’s its beauty. After the hustle of Marrakech, any trip to the Agafay is all about letting the day – and night – slow down. Both camps have plenty of gorgeous lounging areas but there are also many activities on offer. Hiking in the Agafay is wonderful but both Scarabeo and White Camel also offer activities including yoga, quad biking, camel riding and astronomy.
The ultimate experience though must be a sunrise balloon ride. Float up as sun breaks and watch the landscape below come alive as the sky is drenched in colour. You won’t forget it.
We’d also recommend a detour to Lalla Takerkoust on your way to or from Agafay. The beautiful lake is about thirty minutes drive from the desert and there are several restaurants bordering the water. It’s a great way to soak up the sun and see more of the countryside around Marrakech.
