BEST FASHION SHOPPING IN THE MEDINA, MARRAKECH

Marrakech has become one of the most exciting fashion destinations in the world. A new generation of independent designers is drawing on the city’s artisanal heritage, its master tailors, embroiderers and seamstresses, to create pieces you won’t find anywhere else. From handmade kaftans to contemporary separates, fashion shopping in Marrakech is now about discovering original, limited-edition pieces with real craft behind them.

If fashion shopping is top of your to-do list here in Marrakech, here are our top places where you can find everything from luxe wardrobe basics to boundary-pushing pieces, all located within the medina.

HANOUT

grid of fashion models in designer clothes - pleated and embroidered shirts and colourful checked long length dress

Hanout is one of the new crop of independent labels that’s increasingly drawing visitors to Marrakech. Designer Meriem Nour creates everything from tailored jackets to printed separates for Hanout, which is known for its elevated take on day and party wear with a colourful Seventies vibe. The cut is impeccable and the fabrics sublime. If you visit her atelier, you can have pieces customised to your exact measurements. @hanoutboutique

TOPOLINA

Every piece designed by Belgian designer Isabella Topolina is unique so you’ll never quite know what you’ll find, but can always be sure it will be eye-catching. Fabrics – often vintage – are reworked into one-off pieces with a retro feel. Think reversible jackets with pattern clashing linings and draping separates. There are also bags and accessories in her cute medina store, as well as a stunning showroom in Sidi Ghanem. @topolinashop

LE BRONX DELUXE

They say their clothes have a ‘rebel twist’ and they don’t disappoint. Camo jackets hand embroidered in acid yellow, keffiyeh and tartan fabric pattern-clashed in shirts and dresses, and fluid shimmering disco separates. If you want to get your groovy glam on, this is the place to go. @lebronxdeluxe

NORYA AYRON

Make like Kate Moss and Sharon Stone in one of the pieces made by kaftan queen Norya Ayron. She cuts a variety of traditional shapes before pulling them forward with her fabric selection. She has a small shop in the medina – and a larger one in Gueliz – that also carry coats, trousers and shirts. @noryaayron

OUBAICH

In a city of so many cut and paste kaftans, Oubaich is truly original. Their jewel box of a store is packed with dresses, shirts and co-ords in gorgeously draping satin silk, softest woven linen and indulgent velvet corduroy. But it’s the colours and the craft that really mark out the collection. Exquisite. @oubaichmarrakech

BYSLY

If statement co-ords are your thing then Bysly is a must-stop. Their tiny boutique just around the corner from Ben Youssef Medersa is packed with patterned shirts and trousers in all the shades of the rainbow. Everything is made with fluid fabrics that will perfectly drape when you’re lounging on a roof terrace or a bar stool.  @_bysly_

EL FENN BOUTIQUE

Our boutique is where we bring together the best of Marrakech’s independent fashion scene under one roof. We partner directly with designers to curate exclusive lines and limited-edition pieces. And right now, the edit is one of our strongest yet.

Travel

Patrice Kouadio imagines his collections as ‘postcards’ about travel and his kaftans sum up this ethos: stunning statement pieces that will always evoke Marrakech when you wear them. His meticulously crafted, Marrakech-inspired designs capture the essence of this magical city with re-imagined kaftans and gender-neutral tailored pieces.

Mlle Nancy

Mlle Nancy hits a perfect note of casual meets glamour in jackets that can be thrown over anything from a white tee and jeans to an evening dress. Dress up or down as you like.

Stella H

Laid-back resort wear for those who want effortless style poolside and beyond.

Maison Leo Jeanne

Have we found the perfect summer flats? We think so. Easy, playful and a quick fix for adding a pop of colour to any outfit.

Cockney Arab

Shems Bonar is a British-Moroccan artist, DJ and founder of Cockney Arab, a t-shirt brand that reflects his dual heritage. Each piece is made from 100% organic cotton in Portugal before being embroidered by women in a village on the outskirts of Marrakesh. This is street wear elevated with a hand-worked twist.

Sana’s Atelier

We love the clever use of colour that’s a signature of Sana’s Atelier. These summer kaftans feature beautiful hand-embroidered detailing and a splash of red to shake things up.

Ana K

Alexanne Chapon grew up in Casablanca before moving abroad to study in France and work as a journalist. But after returning to Morocco, she decided to switch gears, inspired by the artisans she’d known all her life. Today her Ana K label produces colour-soaked and playful fashion. Think shirts in soft cotton and linen and a clever use of prints.

Food Bag Foundation

Food bags are recycled, hand embroidered and turned into totes that come in a kaleidoscope of patterns and colours. Each bag is made to order and you can customise size and handles. This season’s collection is inspired by Morocco’s slow food movement and features everything from flowers to pomegranates.

We’ve also got men’s fashion plus our homeware edit. The El Fenn boutique is open Monday–Sunday, 11am to 8pm.
