OUR TOP 5 FAVOURITE PLACES TO FOOD SHOP

The food culture here in Marrakech is always evolving. And right now, we’re loving the new breed of speciality food shops opening up all over town where you can stock up on Moroccan delicacies to take home. Here’s our pick of the best in town.

BARBE

This fabulous shop in Gueliz is packed with products. There’s everything from speciality honeys and amlou (a paste made from crushed almonds and argan oil that’s perfect for breakfast) to a great selection of Moroccan wines – and delicious salty snacks to pair with them. @barbe_marrakech

FARM SLIMANE

All the products here are grown organically on a farm just outside Marrakech. Shop organic herbs and spices, hand-produced olive oil and delicious granola. Then pop into their sister shop next door – the brilliant Blue Ribbon bakery – for a coffee and pastry. @farmslimane

Turn your kitchen into a mini art gallery courtesy of Hassan Hajjaj – one of Morocco’s most well-known contemporary artists. His shop in Sidi Ghanem carries a line of gorgeous tea tins. There’s also a gallery space and cafe. @jajjah.tea

Package nerds alert. Everything at MFF comes drop dead gorgeously boxed. The shop is filled with chocolate, dates, biscuits and teas and coffee from all over the world. And there’s also a chic cafe serving hot and cold drinks. Try the berry burst iced tea. Delicious. @marrakechfinefood

SOUKS

The souk is of course packed with food. For spices, we prefer the shops on the road heading to the Koutoubia where the sell is a little more gentle. Also stock up on nuts and herbal teas including rose, verveine and hibiscus. Head to the olive section for well… olives – plus jars of preserved lemons. And if you can fridge a bag of fresh herbs overnight before you leave, go to the stalls at the top left hand corner of Djemaa el Fna for bunches of mixed tea herbs including chamomile, mint and thyme. Get home, brew a tea and transport yourself back to Marrakech.
